It's been a while since my last potato bag update. Things have been going along great. The bags are working beautifully, but something had been eating the foliage on the red potatoes. My husband thought it was slugs, but I never saw any slugs on the plant. He did pick some slugs off of it though.
The above photo was taken in July. You can see the start of the damage. In less than five weeks, the stems were nearly gone. I didn't think to take a photo before we dug up the potatoes.
The white potatoes right next to it were untouched, so I was unsure if it was really the slugs causing all the damage. We haven't seen any potato bugs on them.
We decided to cut our losses and dig up the red potatoes and got a handful of pretty small potatoes. While digging up the potatoes I noticed just how well drained the bags were, yet the soil was moist. The straw layers were decomposing nicely and it will be a good addition to our compost pile.
The Kennebec potatoes are still doing great, and I hope we get a larger crop of them. I'm sure we will since they still have all their leaves.
